  • Buffer: Strategic inventory buffers protect the bottleneck from supply variability or disruptions.
  • Rope: Upstream processes adjust their pace based on the bottleneck’s rhythm.

4. Elevate – Increase Bottleneck Capacity

Once you’ve optimized the existing bottleneck, consider ways to increase its capacity:

  • Add faster or more automated equipment.
